The system works via radio signals sent from a small radio unit inside the meter box that is connected to the water meter. The meter radio unit sends readings to regional collector units that then transmit the meter reading data to receivers in Town Hall. There will be nine regional collectors located on existing water tanks, radio and cell phone towers located throughout Cary.

base stationThese collectors consist of a base unit that is 5’ high, 3’ wide, and 2.5’ deep and an eleven foot tall antenna. The base unit will be located at the base of the tower and the antenna mounted on the tower structure.

Each unit will send a 111-millisecond usage report from the meter to Town Hall four times a day; otherwise, the unit will not be transmitting. Each 111-millisecond transmission transmits at power levels up to 2 watts on a primary use licensed band in the 800-960 MHz spectrum, which is 3 times greater than a cell phone, and half as strong as a police radio.
