Project Background

The West Cary Disc Golf Course will be located across from the New Hope Church Road Trailhead Park. The course was originally planned for Mills Park, but based on a detailed analysis of the Mills Park site, both staff and consultants determined that it might not be the most appropriate location for a disc golf course due stream buffers and wet conditions. Several other sites in west Cary were reviewed. The future park site was chosen as the preferred site for the western disc golf course as an interim use. This site is adjacent to the American Tobacco Trail. Existing parking for 30 cars is located at the gravel lot on New Hope Church Road. Parking and restrooms are also located at the New Hope Church Road Trailhead Park. There will be no bridge crossings needed to implement the disc golf course, and there is a great mix of land features and terrain, creating the setting for a course with a great balance of playability and aesthetics.

Project Scope

The current project will include the following features:

  • 22 Holes
  • Tees
  • Baskets
  • Practices Baskets
  • ADA Access from parking lot

Project  Cost

The total budget for construction of Cary's second disc golf course was $120,000, with the original scope to include the clearing and build out of 30 pro and amateur tee pads for the 22-hole course. The expected completion date was set to be in Fall 2019.

Due to careful budget management, the scope of work has now been expanded to include the remaining 36 of a total planned 58 tee pads. The addition of these tees will allow all skill levels to play this course from the day it opens.

Project Schedule

This expansion and the COVID-19 Pandemic, however, will push the completion date out until at least late summer of 2020 or Fall 2020.

Our partnering organization on this unique and cooperative effort, the Capital Area Disc League (CADL), will continue to spearhead the remaining build of the course through volunteer efforts.
