Railroad Planning and Closure Details

The Cary-specific work will be broken into ten hour periods on Mondays through Thursdays. For each work period, Norfolk Southern plans to work with a crew of about 20 crew members and approximately 20 pieces of equipment to remove/replace old ties and resurface the track. To ensure safety and efficiency of the project, multiple simultaneous crossing closures may be necessary at times due to the railroad track alignment, size and magnitude of the proposed crew, and availability of equipment.

Railroad crews will conduct track work on a schedule designed to minimize disruption to freight and passenger service. A separate crew will follow to repave each crossing prior to reopening to traffic. Any work performed at night is exempt from the Town’s noise ordinance.

Norfolk Southern crews will begin work near N. Harrison Avenue and continue east, parallel to Chapel Hill Road and E. Chatham Street, crossing N. Harrison Avenue, North Academy Street, Maynard Road and Trinity Road in Cary.  Norfolk Southern advised they will skip the crossing at Maynard Road. Cary has requested Norfolk Southern work to reopen each crossing as quickly as possible to minimize the number of simultaneous closings.
